Advancing gender parity in the film industry by supporting the production, exhibition, and promotion of all women filmmakers. Established in February 2018. We are a nonprofit organization with 501-c3 status in the state of New York.

OUR MISSION
The FOFIF amplifies the work of all women and non-binary filmmakers early in their career through our grant program for short films, our unique programming commitment to theatrical representation (including distribution), our community building with women in the industry to facilitate necessary culture change, and through ensuring equal representation within all of our programs. The FOFIF believes that gender equality is intersectional with racial and LGBTQI+ equality and is therefore committed to creating industry-wide partnerships to work in solidarity towards an equitable future of film.

The FOFIF SHORT FILM FUND

When you buy a FOFIF shirt from us or donate director, you support short film! All proceeds from your purchase of FOFIF products go to women filmmakers with a short film in any stage of production. We aim to award grants twice annually and with our partners, Heard City and Nice Shoes, to offer post-production grants. To date, we've been able to help support 54+ projects including Sundance Jury Award Winner REST STOP by Crystal Kayiza.

The FOFIF SCREENINGS

We believe that exhibition and audience relationships are essential towards gender equality behind the camera. We present an ongoing screening program featuring contemporary feature and short films directed by women with our partner, The Museum of Modern Art. THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE, PART 1 (July 2018) and THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE, PART 2 (February 2019), THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE, PART 3 (February 2020), and THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE, PART 4 (June 2023).

We also present monthly screenings at Nitehawk Cinema (Brooklyn, NY) and work with other cinemas all over New York City. We also have a quarterly program at PAMCut’s Tomorrow Theater, part of Portland Art Museum and present screenings at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles.

HOW WE’RE DIFFERENT
The FOFIF offers the “now what” after filmmakers complete their film. Many organizations offer limited funding or offer a residency as a one-time opportunity. At The FOFIF, we invest in the long-term careers of the filmmakers we support by offering support no other organization does: screening opportunities. The FOFIF is uniquely dedicated to ensuring the films directed by women and non-binary filmmakers get into the cinemas after festival runs or for their theatrical premieres. By doing this, we center not only the creation of incredible work by women and non-binary filmmakers, but also its lifespan. We're able to do this via our vast network of filmmaker, distributor, marketing, and festival contacts. Visible representation and audience connection is essential to creating long-lasting change in the film industry.

With the crucial focus of our work being exhibition, it’s critical that we ensure the films screened represent a multitude of voices. This is not only expressed in who is telling these stories but, also, what stories are being told. Further, this work comes hand in hand with creating engaged audiences for these incredible projects and fostering a community between filmmakers, exhibitors, and audiences.
