The Project: On her 12th birthday, Rue starts observing the women around her and in turn notices the hair on her skin as a barrier to her beauty. In the span of a day, she questions what it means to be pretty and embarks on an everlasting relationship with beauty. (Narrative).

The Filmmaker: Ruhi Radke is a New York City based filmmaker with a film production degree from Emerson College. In the span of her college career she has written and directed the CampusFest audience winning short film, Just Us Two and Allen and Imran. After graduating in the Fall of 2016, she wrote the script of Red Sari and shot it last year in 2017. Red Sari had its world premiere on the opening night of the Mustard Seed Film Festival, which is the first and only South Asian film festival in Philadelphia. Inspired by her parents’ wedding, Red Sari is a snapshot of young love and the fear and excitement that comes with commitment at such a vulnerable age. She has finished writing her first feature script Hibiscus and is currently working on her first documentary Adorn which is about beauty and hair. Brown Sugar is her next narrative short, further exploring beauty and cultural identities.
