Jazleana Jones
PINK IS THE COLOR OF THE OCEAN

Jazleana Jones was awarded the FSU Film School's Bold Reach Award in 2021. This grant is awarded to a graduating BFA student who has shown boundary pushing choices in their filmmaking and allows them to take the first steps in their career. The Future of Film is Female has partnered with FSU for the Bold Reach Award this year (and for future years) to support women filmmakers in their undergraduate film program.

About the project: This film is about losing the freedom of youth. This film is about dedicating your life to protect someone you love.

Growing up with an absent mother, Carmen devotes her life to her younger half-sister, May. With their mother incarcerated, Carmen works tirelessly to make ends meet, striving to keep her head above water. Through it all, they have the ocean, a safe place. When you float in the waves, the weight of the world keeps you above the water. Even under the heaviest burdens, something can still hold you up. “Pink is the Color of the Ocean” centers the bond of two sisters who have nothing but each other.

About the filmmaker: In an ideal world, Jazleana Jones would communicate solely through images. Drawn to stories that embody what it means to be alive, she aims to challenge the mundane perspectives of everyday life through her cinematography. Having recently graduated from the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts, she has learned the value of seeing moments in colors and angles, rather than words and conversations. As a recipient of the American Society of Cinematographers Heritage Award and the 2021 Bold Reach Award, she is grateful to continue translating the thoughts in her mind into images for all to connect with.
